Archimedes of Syracuse 287 - 212 B. C.

Archimedes of Syracuse is renowned as perhaps the greatest of Greek mathematicians and scientists. Archimedes made many first rate mathematical contributions, introducing ideas and methods that are at the heart of what we know today as integral and deferential calculus, that were to be developed nearly two millennia later by Newton and Leibnitz.

Archimedes had the rare gift of being able to integrate mathematics and science to solve the problems of his day. One of the most famous discoveries is the law of the Lever, this achievement is widely reported to have brought forth the exclamation

"Give me a fulcrum on which to rest and I will move the earth"
